The colored metal casing.

Tools used in this guide : Phillips #00 Screwdriver , Small Flathead Screwdriver , Spudger
Parts relevant to this guide : iPod Mini Casing (Light Blue) , iPod Mini Casing (Silver)

Step 1 — Top Bezel
Before opening your iPod, ensure that the hold switch is in the locked position.

Step 2
Carefully insert a small flathead screwdriver in the seam between the metal casing and white plastic top. Use the screwdriver to pry up the white plastic top bezel. Be careful not to damage the soft plastic with your screwdriver.
The top bezel is held on with an adhesive, so it may be necessary to pry up in several different locations to free the part.

Step 3
Lift the top bezel off of the iPod.

Step 4 — Bottom Bezel
Carefully insert a small flathead screwdriver in the seam between the metal casing and white plastic bottom Use the screwdriver to pry up the white plastic bottom bezel. Be careful not to damage the soft plastic with your screwdriver.

Step 5
Use a flathead screwdriver to pry out the metal retaining bracket beneath the bottom bezel. You can free the bracket by first pushing in the metal arms on the corners and then lifting the bracket

Step 6
Lift the metal retaining bracket out of the iPod.

Step 7 — Battery
Use a spudger or the tip of your finger to carefully disconect the orange click wheel ribbon from the logic board.

Step 8
Remove the two #00 Phillips screws securing the headphone jack to the casing.

Step 9
Carefully slide the iPod out of its casing by pushing on the logic board near the bottom edge of the click wheel.
Do not pull on the headphone jack board at the top of the iPod, as the connector to the logic board is fragile.

Step 10
After pushing the logic board out sufficiently, gently grasp the logic board on either side of the display, and continue to slide the iPod out of its casing.

Step 11
Use a spudger to pull back on the small black plastic tab holding the click wheel in place.

Step 12
Continue to pull back on the black plastic tab and use your other hand to press down on the click wheel and begin to slide it out of the iPod.
It's important to press down on the click wheel as you slide it out, otherwise the click wheel could be scratched by the iPod's metal casing.

Installing iPod Shuffle 1st Generation Casing

Installing iPod Shuffle 1st Generation Casing

The white plastic casing.

Tools used in this guide : Exacto Knife , Spudger
Parts relevant to this guide : iPod Shuffle Gen 1 Casing

Step 1 — Hold Switch
Before opening your iPod, ensure that the hold switch is in the locked position.

Step 2
Use a spudger to pry up the white plastic hold switch.

Step 3 — Casing
If present, remove the cap from the USB port.

Step 4
The following step can be challenging and time consuming. Be sure to go slowly and have patience to prevent damaging your iPod.
Use an Exacto knife to separate the glue holding the USB port on the iPod. Run the knife along the seam between the two sections of the iPod until the glue is separated. Expect to run the knife along this edge 20-30 times before the glue will be entirely freed.

Step 5
Continue to run the knife around all four edges of the USB port until the glue is released. You may be able to gently wiggle the knife from side to side to help release the glue.

Step 6
Use a spudger to push on the headphone jack and slide the USB port out of its housing.
If the USB port doesn't come free, check to make sure all the glue holding the USB port in place has been released. Pulling on the USB port itself is not recommended as there is a fragile ribbon cable that can be ripped if the USB port suddenly comes free.

Step 7
After the USB port comes free, carefully slide it out of its housing. Don't pull it out too far because there's still a ribbon cable connecting it to the logic board.

Step 8
Continue to slide the iPod out of its casing by using a spudger to push on the logic board near the headphone jack.

Step 9
Turn the iPod so that the click wheel is facing up. This will prevent the battery indicator from falling out.
If the battery indicator does fall out, don't forget to replace it prior to reassembling the iPod. Getting the battery indicator back in place can be tricky. You'll have to slide it in from the end of the iPod's casing and get it to fall into its slot in the casing.
Slide the iPod out of its casing.

Congratulations!
