Installing iPod Classic Hard Drive

Step 1 — Battery

Apple designed their new iPods to be very difficult to take apart without destroying major components. Because of the metal faceplate, the metal backing, and the 13 (yes, 13) metal clips holding the case together, this is one of the toughest iPods to disassemble. Proceed with caution and the warning that you may significantly damage your iPod beyond its present condition. Also, you may want a few extra pairs of iPod opening tools during installation, as they are easy to ruin when opening the iPod. Have fun!

Before opening your iPod, ensure that the hold switch is in the locked position.

Step 2

Opening this iPod is challenging. Don't get discouraged if it takes you a few tries before the iPod is opened. One thing to notice is the angle of the plastic iPod opening tool's tip while inserting it into the iPod. Ideally, the angle should be as vertical as possible while still clearing the edge of the rear panel.

Insert a plastic iPod opening tool into the seam between the front and back of the iPod.

Step 3

Insert another plastic iPod opening tool into the seam between the front and back of the iPod, leaving at least 1.5 inches of space between the two tools.

Step 4

At an angle, carefully insert a putty knife about 1/8 inch into the seam between the two opening tools.

There are thin metal rails running along the inside of the rear panel, so take great care when inserting the putty knife.

Once the putty knife has cleared the lip of the rear panel, pivot the putty knife so that it is vertical, and carefully (but firmly) wiggle it straight down into the gap between the iPod opening tools.

Step 5

Push with your fingers on the rear panel behind the putty knife to minimize bending. Slowly flex the putty knife, as shown in the picture, to ensure that most of the metal tabs on this side of the iPod are disengaged.

The theory behind this method is, rather than attempting to not bend the rear panel at all, to bend it in a favorable manner that allows you to easily restore it later. Therefore, any bend in the sides of the rear panel should be drawing the lip of the rear panel away from the iPod, rather than pushing out on the curved surface. This method also disengages as many of the side clips as possible.

Step 6

Remove the putty knife from the iPod and reinsert it closer to the corner of the iPod, using the same wiggle method as before.

If at all possible, do not bend the corner of the rear panel.

Step 7

Near the headphone jack, insert an iPod opening tool into the seam between the front and back of the iPod.

You may find it easier to carefully flex the putty knife downward in order to create more of a gap for the iPod opening tool, but be sure not to bend the corner of the rear panel!

Step 8

Near the center of the display, carefully insert a metal spudger into the gap created by the iPod opening tool.

It is easy to create a noticeable bump in the rear panel here that is difficult to repair. When prying the tab free, try to have the metal spudger pivot on the edge of the rear panel rather than bending the rear panel outward.

Using the metal spudger, disengage the single clip on the top of the iPod.

Step 9

Near the other top corner, insert an iPod opening tool into the seam between the front and back of the iPod

Step 10

On the other side, insert an iPod opening tool into the seam between the front and back of the iPod.

You may find it easier to angle the iPod opening tool stuck in the top corner in order to create a sufficient gap.

Step 11

Remove the iPod opening tool from the top corner and insert it into the seam between the front and back of the iPod, leaving at least 1.5 inches of space between the two tools (as done on the other side).

Step 12

At an angle, carefully insert a putty knife about 1/8 inch into the seam between the two opening tools.

Again, there are thin metal rails running along the inside of the rear panel, so take great care when inserting the putty knife.

Once the putty knife has cleared the lip of the rear panel, angle the putty knife so that it is vertical, and carefully (but firmly) wiggle it straight down into the iPod via the gap between the iPod opening tools.

Push with your fingers on the rear panel behind the putty knife to minimize bending. Ever so slightly flex the putty knife to ensure that most of the metal tabs on this side of the iPod are disengaged.

Step 13

The metal clips near the corners are notorious for tenaciously gripping the front panel. It is necessary to disengage these clips in order to open the iPod.

Carefully insert a metal spudger into the area near the stubborn metal clip.

Step 14

Gently wiggle the metal spudger down so that it is all the way in the rear panel.

Step 15

Gently begin to disengage the clip from the front panel.

Step 16

Continue to push up on the front panel with the metal spudger until the metal clip releases.

Step 17

There are two ribbon cables connecting the rear panel to the rest of the iPod. In the following step, be careful not to damage these ribbon cables.

Grasp the front panel assembly with one hand and the rear panel with the other.

Take a deep breath!

Gently (GENTLY) disengage the remaining clips on the rear panel by pulling the tops of the front and rear panels away from each other (think of the bottom of the iPod as a hinge), taking great care not to damage the ribbon cables holding the two halves together.

Step 18

Use a spudger to slide up the connector holding the orange battery ribbon in place. You only need to lift the locking bar up about 2 mm to free the cable.

Slide the orange battery ribbon out of its connector.

Step 19

Place the rear panel next to the iPod, being careful not to strain the orange headphone jack cable.

Step 20

Lift the hard drive up with one hand so you can access the headphone jack ribbon beneath.

Use a spudger to flip up the plastic tab holding the headphone jack ribbon in place. The tab will rotate up 90 degrees, releasing the ribbon cable.

Slide the orange headphone jack ribbon out of its connector.

The rear panel is now free from the iPod.

Step 21

Now to repair the damage caused by liberating the internal parts of the iPod Classic! It is highly likely that at least one of the metal clips in the lower case has been bent upward. These clips must all be pointing downward in order to reinstall the rear panel.

Step 22

Take the broad, flat side of the metal spudger and push the clip down, taking care not to tear the thin metal rail from the rear panel.

Be careful not to damage any of the headphone jack parts while shaping these clips!

Step 23

On a clean, hard surface, lay the rear panel on its side. Carefully but firmly push down on it, rolling the entire lip side back into its proper spot.

It may be necessary to do this multiple times in order to achieve optimal straightness on the sides. It is better to have the edges of the case pushed in slightly too far rather than not far enough, because the reseating of the front panel will bend the rear panel into its correct alignment.

Now that the rear panel is back to a beautiful condition, you can move on to repairing the iPod!

Step 24

Rotate the hard drive out of the framework and place it so that the connector is facing up.

Use a spudger to flip up the plastic tab holding the orange hard drive ribbon in place. The tab will rotate up 90 degrees, releasing the ribbon cable.

Step 25

Slide the orange hard drive ribbon cable directly out of its connector.

If you are replacing the hard drive in your iPod and it did not come with the rubber mounting brackets and foam padding, transfer these items from your old drive to the replacement drive.

Step 26 — Front Panel

Remove the three Phillips screws securing the front panel to the metal framework.

Step 27

Rotate the iPod 180 degrees and remove the three Phillips screws securing the front panel to the metal framework on the other side.

Step 28

Carefully work around the edges of the iPod to separate the front panel from the gray metal framework.

You may meet some resistance, as there is a mild adhesive used to help hold the two pieces together.

Step 29

Lift the framework (including the attached screen, logic board, and click wheel) away from the front panel.

Make sure that the click wheel button is in place before reinstalling the framework in the front panel.

Step 30

The front panel is now free from the iPod.

Rotate the iPod 180 degrees and remove the three Phillips screws securing the front panel to the metal framework on the other side.

Step 28

Carefully work around the edges of the iPod to separate the front panel from the gray metal framework.

You may meet some resistance, as there is a mild adhesive used to help hold the two pieces together.

Step 29

Lift the framework (including the attached screen, logic board, and click wheel) away from the front panel.

Make sure that the click wheel button is in place before reinstalling the framework in the front panel.

Step 30

The front panel is now free from the iPod.

Step 31 — Click Wheel

Use a spudger to flip up the plastic tab holding the orange display ribbon in place. The tab will rotate up 90 degrees towards the display, releasing the ribbon cable.

Step 32

Slide the orange display ribbon cable directly out of its connector.

Step 33

Lift the framework assembly up, and slide the display and LCD metal backplate out of the framework assembly.

Step 34

Remove the two Phillips screws securing the logic board to the framework.

Step 35

Carefully push the logic board away from the metal framework.

The logic board is secured to the framework with mild adhesive. Be careful not to bend the logic board by pushing too much in any one spot.

Step 36

Move the click wheel from beneath the logic board so that the icons on the click wheel are visible.

Use a spudger to flip up the plastic tab holding the orange click wheel ribbon in place. The tab will rotate up 90 degrees, releasing the ribbon cable.

Step 37

Use a spudger to lift the click wheel cable off the logic board. Be careful not to bend the cable too much, or the electronics on the cable could be damaged.

When reinstalling the clickwheel, make sure that the click wheel cable is pushed all the way into its connector.

Step 38

Slide the click wheel cable out of its connector.

Lift the click wheel assembly away from the logic board.

Step 1 — Battery

Before opening your iPod, ensure that the hold switch is in the locked position.

Step 2

Insert a plastic iPod opening tool into the seam between the front and back of the iPod.

Step 3

Insert another plastic iPod opening tool into the seam between the front and back of the iPod, leaving at least 1.5 inches of space between the two tools.

Step 4

At an angle, carefully insert a putty knife about 1/8 inch into the seam between the two opening tools.

There are thin metal rails running along the inside of the rear panel, so take great care when inserting the putty knife.

Step 5

Step 6

Remove the putty knife from the iPod and reinsert it closer to the corner of the iPod, using the same wiggle method as before.

If at all possible, do not bend the corner of the rear panel.

Step 7

Near the headphone jack, insert an iPod opening tool into the seam between the front and back of the iPod.

You may find it easier to carefully flex the putty knife downward in order to create more of a gap for the iPod opening tool, but be sure not to bend the corner of the rear panel!

Step 8

Near the center of the display, carefully insert a metal spudger into the gap created by the iPod opening tool.

Using the metal spudger, disengage the single clip on the top of the iPod.

Step 9

Near the other top corner, insert an iPod opening tool into the seam between the front and back of the iPod

Step 10

On the other side, insert an iPod opening tool into the seam between the front and back of the iPod.

You may find it easier to angle the iPod opening tool stuck in the top corner in order to create a sufficient gap.

Step 11

Step 12

At an angle, carefully insert a putty knife about 1/8 inch into the seam between the two opening tools.

Again, there are thin metal rails running along the inside of the rear panel, so take great care when inserting the putty knife.

Step 13

The metal clips near the corners are notorious for tenaciously gripping the front panel. It is necessary to disengage these clips in order to open the iPod.

Carefully insert a metal spudger into the area near the stubborn metal clip.

Step 14

Gently wiggle the metal spudger down so that it is all the way in the rear panel.

Step 15

Gently begin to disengage the clip from the front panel.

Step 16

Continue to push up on the front panel with the metal spudger until the metal clip releases.

Step 17

There are two ribbon cables connecting the rear panel to the rest of the iPod. In the following step, be careful not to damage these ribbon cables.

Grasp the front panel assembly with one hand and the rear panel with the other.

Take a deep breath!

Step 18

Use a spudger to slide up the connector holding the orange battery ribbon in place. You only need to lift the locking bar up about 2 mm to free the cable.

Slide the orange battery ribbon out of its connector.

Step 19

Place the rear panel next to the iPod, being careful not to strain the orange headphone jack cable.

Step 20

Lift the hard drive up with one hand so you can access the headphone jack ribbon beneath.

Use a spudger to flip up the plastic tab holding the headphone jack ribbon in place. The tab will rotate up 90 degrees, releasing the ribbon cable.

Slide the orange headphone jack ribbon out of its connector.

The rear panel is now free from the iPod.

Take the broad, flat side of the metal spudger and push the clip down, taking care not to tear the thin metal rail from the rear panel.

Be careful not to damage any of the headphone jack parts while shaping these clips!

Step 23

On a clean, hard surface, lay the rear panel on its side. Carefully but firmly push down on it, rolling the entire lip side back into its proper spot.

Now that the rear panel is back to a beautiful condition, you can move on to repairing the iPod!

Step 24

The battery is attached to the rear panel with adhesive. Be careful not to tear the orange headphone jack ribbon when removing the battery.

Use a spudger to lift the battery and the attached orange cable out of the iPod. If you have a 160 GB iPod, the battery will be thicker than the one pictured.

Identification and Background

iPod Classic

Released in September 2007, the iPod classic sported a thinner body and dramatically increased battery life. The case of the iPod classic is clad in shades of anodized aluminum with a chrome rear panel and was offered in sizes of 80, 120, and 160 GB.

Use the iPod identification system to help you identify your iPod. They tend to look very similar, and it's important to know which one you have before ordering any replacement parts.

The iPod Classic looks like the 5th Generation iPod, but with a metal front case and multiple case color options. Troubleshooting and replacing parts is somewhat complex, but we have made it easier below.

Note: There are two versions of iPod Classic: thin and thick. The thin version refers to the 80 GB, 120 GB, and thin 160 GB models. The thick version refers to the thick 160 GB model. If you are unsure which 160 GB version you have (as some parts are not interchangeable between models), perform the following steps:

1) Locate the serial etched on the rear panel of the iPod

2) Go to Apple's Online Service Assistant and enter your serial number and country

3) Look at the text under the picture on the left. If it reads "iPod Classic," you have the thick version. If it reads "iPod Classic (Late 2009)," you have the thin version.

iPod won't turn on

No matter what you do, you can't get your iPod to turn on.

Hold switch on

Before delving into the guts of your iPod, check to make sure the hold switch isn't activated. If the hold switch is on, the iPod will ignore any input on the click wheel and refuse to do anything. If your iPod's problem isn't so easily solved, read on.

Drained/bad battery

If your iPod won't turn on, especially if it has not been used recently, you may simply have a drained battery. Plug your iPod into your computer or AC adapter and see if anything happens. Ideally your iPod will recognize it has been connected to a power source and charge its battery. If it will no longer charge, the battery must be replaced. We sell replacement batteries for both thin and thick iPod Classics.

Bad display

It is possible that it appears nothing is happening because the display is bad. If you hold the iPod up to your ear you should be able to hear the hard drive spinning. If the iPod sounds like it is working properly but nothing is visible, it is possible the display is bad and must be replaced.

Bad logic board

If your iPod does nothing when plugged into a computer, the problem most likely lies in the logic board. We stock logic boards, and we offer the instructions for installing them.

Bad click wheel connection

If the click wheel is not seated correctly, it is possible that the iPod will not boot. Be sure that the bar on the click wheel is completely flipped down to ensure a positive connection.

No audio or distorted audio

Your iPod turns on and appears to work, but when you plug in headphones or speakers, the audio doesn't play properly.

Bad headphones/speakers

It's unlikely your headphones or speakers are bad, but it's worthwhile to eliminate these as the source of your problem at the beginning. Try your iPod with another set of headphones or speakers just to make sure that the problem is with the iPod.

Bad audio jack

The most likely cause of audio output problems on iPods is a bad audio-out jack. We sell the thin and thick headphone jacks, and we offer free guides for replacement.

Corrupted software

It isn't often that Apple gives specific directions about how to fix your problem! Restoring the iPod will erase everything on it, so make sure everything on the iPod is stored elsewhere prior to restoring. To restore, connect your iPod to a computer with iTunes installed. Upon connecting, a message may pop up, informing you that your hard drive is corrupted and/or in recovery mode. If one of these messages pops up, click the "Restore Now" button and follow the directions. If no pop up message appears, click "Restore" on the iPod summary page (click on your iPod icon on the left menu to find this page). Follow the directions to restore. If your iPod displays the text "Please wait. Very Low Battery," leave it plugged in. This charges the iPod enough to be able to restore. If the iPod hangs on this screen for long periods of time, you may need a new battery.

Bad hard drive cable

It is also possible that the sad iPod icon is caused by a bad hard drive cable. In this instance, re-connecting or replacing the hard drive cable (thin or thick) first is a good idea.

Bad click wheel connection

If the click wheel is not seated correctly, it is possible that the iPod will go to this screen. Be sure that the bar on the click wheel is completely flipped down to ensure a positive connection.

Bad hard drive

If checking the connections does not work, you may have a bad hard drive. If no information is being sent to the iPod from the hard drive, it makes the iPod quite unhappy! Bad logic board

If attempting to restore the iPod and diagnosing the hard drive and connections does not fix the problem, the issue is probably the logic board.

Corrupted software

Sometimes, a reset and restore will fix a sad iPod. Connect your iPod to your computer and use iTunes to restore the iPod. Restoring the iPod will erase everything on it, so make sure everything on the iPod is stored elsewhere prior to restoring. Sometimes it may be necessary to restore the iPod several times before it works properly. If you are unable to restore your iPod using iTunes, you can hard reset your iPod. iPod Classics can be hard reset by booting while holding the menu and play/pause buttons. This should result in a quick dark screen followed by the standard Apple boot graphic.

Bad hard drive

It is also possible that the sad iPod icon is caused by a bad or poorly connected hard drive. If no information is being sent to the iPod from the hard drive, it makes the iPod quite unhappy! Bad battery connection

Another potential issue is the battery's connection to the logic board (a bad battery should not cause this error, however). To test this, carefully detach the battery and re-connect it to the logic board.

Bad logic board

If restoring the iPod and diagnosing the hard drive and battery connection does not fix the problem, the sad iPod is likely caused by a problem with the logic board. There's not much to troubleshoot here. Basically, the only option is to replace the logic board.

Folder icon appears on startup

The iPod displays an image of a folder when turned on.

Bad hard drive or cable

One of the best methods to diagnose a failing hard drive is to listen to the drive. If you put your iPod up to your ear, you should hear a smooth-sounding whirr of the hard drive spinning. Any loud clicking or grinding sounds may mean that your iPod's drive is failing. If you don't hear anything, the drive is not getting power or is very damaged and can't spin up.

One possible way of predicting whether the hard drive or cable is the culprit is to watch what happens when the iPod is attempting to boot. If the iPod goes from the Apple logo to the folder icon almost immediately, the cable is most likely at fault. In this instance, re-connecting or replacing the hard drive cable (thin or thick) first is a good idea. If the iPod hangs on the Apple screen for a few seconds before displaying the folder icon, the hard drive is probably the problem and must be replaced.

iPod doesn't boot past Apple logo

The iPod either boots to an Apple logo and freezes or continuously reboots.

This guide shows how to re-install the hard drive rubber side bumpers for an iPod Video.

Step 1 — Case

Before opening your iPod, ensure that the hold switch is in the locked position. The slider should be all the way to the right if your iPod is facing you.

Step 2

Opening the iPod can be challenging. Do not get discouraged if it takes you a few tries before the iPod is opened.

Free the first retainer clip on the bottom of the iPod using the large iPod opening tool. The tool's edge should point towards the metal back case to prevent scratching the plastic front.

Step 3

There are five retaining clips on each side of the iPod. The large iPod opening tool will be used to separate the plastic front from the metal back of the iPod.

Insert the large iPod opening tool into the left side of the iPod, with the edge of the tool pointing towards the metal back.

Gently enlarge the existing crevice by wiggling the large iPod opening tool and moving it to the left.

Continue doing so until the entire side of the iPod is loose.

You can then insert the small iPod opening tool near the Hold button. Be very careful while inserting the tool, as the display is very fragile.

Step 4

Gently glide the small iPod opening tool on the top of the display, making sure to free the retaining clips.

The other sides of the iPod should now easily come loose. If they do not, use iPod opening tools on the right side of the iPod in the same way as on the left side of the iPod.

Separate the front of the iPod from the back about an inch (or a couple of centimeters).

The iPod casing is now open, but don't completely separate the two halves just yet. Two ribbon cables are still connecting the back panel to the rest of the iPod.

Step 5

Use a small iPod opening tool to slide up the brown connector holding the orange battery ribbon cable in place. You only need to lift the brown connector up about 1-2mm to free the cable.

Make sure to slide the brown connector directly upwards. The connector is frail and will break if it is accidentally shifted to the side.

Remove the cable from the connector.

Step 6

You should now have one orange ribbon cable still attaching the front case to the back.

At this point you are able to remove and replace the blue rubber bumpers, or continue with separating the case.

Step 7

Lift up the hard drive to expose the headphone jack ribbon connector (indicated by the yellow box).

If the hard drive bumpers come loose, make sure to put them back with the notch as shown in the picture.

Step 8

With the small iPod opening tool, gently lift the brown tab of the headphone ribbon cable connector. The tab will rotate up 90 degrees, releasing the ribbon cable.

Using your fingers, pull out the headphone jack ribbon cable.

Step 9

The front and back of the iPod should now be completely separated.

Step 10 — Hard Drive

Use a small iPod opening tool to release the black hinge holding the hard drive ribbon cable. The tab will rotate up 90 degrees towards the logic board, releasing the ribbon cable.

Use your forefinger to hold the ribbon cable in place; disconnect the drive from the ribbon cable.

Make sure the hard drive rubber side bumpers are attached to the drive being installed. Use the hard drive rubber side bumper installation guide to accomplish this task.

If necessary, the blue foam padding on the hard drive might also need to be transferred to the replacement drive.

Step 11 — Side Bumpers

The rubber side bumpers should be installed as pictured:

The side of the drive that's being propped by the hard drive holding bracket should have the rubber side bumper that has a sidewall on the corner, as indicated by the red box.

There should be a space in between the two smaller rubber side bumpers, as indicated by the yellow box.

Both sides of the drive should be seated snugly, as shown in the third picture.

Be careful not to damage any of the headphone or battery ribbon cables while performing this step.

Insert the small iPod opening tool in between the metal case and battery at the location illustrated by the picture.

Gently wiggle the tool while pushing it further in between the battery and back case. The adhesive holding the battery should give, allowing the battery to be removed from the rear panel.

Step 11 — Headphone Jack and Hold Switch

Be very careful when performing this step, since the orange ribbon cables can easily be broken.

Peel off the tape holding the ribbon cables in place.

Step 12

Remove the two black Phillips screws that are securing the headphone jack to the lower casing.

Step 13

Remove the following two screws:

One black Phillips screw securing the hold switch near the corner of the iPod.

One silver Phillips screw securing the other side of the hold switch.

Step 14

Lift the Hold switch free of its housing on the rear panel.

Slide the headphone jack out of its housing on the rear panel.

Lift the headphone jack and hold switch assembly out of the iPod.

Step 15

If your replacement headphone jack includes the white plastic hold switch, simply reinstall the headphone jack. If your replacement part does not include the plastic hold switch, follow the next steps to transfer the plastic hold switch to your new headphone jack.

If you're just trying to remove the rear panel, you can skip Steps 15 and 16.

Remove the single Phillips screw nearest to the hold switch.

Lift the plastic portion of the Hold switch away from the orange ribbon cable.

Ensure that the black notch lines up with the gray slider during reassembly of the switch (see picture 2).

Step 16

Use the small iPod opening tool to carefully peel the orange ribbon cable and attached black Hold switch up from the metal backing.

When re-attaching the replacement Hold switch, make sure the two small posts on the back of the switch are aligned with the two holes in the metal backing.

Step 17 — Rear Panel

You are now able to replace the rear panel of the iPod.

Rotate the iPod laterally 180 degrees and remove the three black Phillips screws securing the front panel to the metal framework on the other side.

Carefully work around the edge of the iPod to separate the front panel from the gray metal framework.

Lift the framework (including the attached display, logic board, and click wheel) away from the front panel.

Make sure that the click wheel button is in place before reinstalling the framework in the front panel.

Step 13

The front panel should now be free from the rest of the iPod.

Step 14 — Display

Rotate the iPod so the black plastic tab is more accessible to you.

Use a small iPod opening tool (or your fingernail) to flip up the black plastic tab holding the display ribbon in place. The tab will rotate up 90 degrees towards the display, releasing the ribbon cable.

Use your finger to prevent the cable from lifting upwards. Wiggle the display loose from the frame, and then pull it gently outwards to release the display's ribbon cable.

Step 15

The display should now be free from the rest of the iPod.

Step 16 — Framework

Peel up the black tape securing the silver ground strap to the metal framework.

The ground strap is very fragile. Be sure not to break it.

Step 17

Turn the iPod over and peel the orange click wheel ground tab up from the metal framework.

Be sure to detach only the thin ground tab, not the wider click wheel ribbon.

Carefully push the logic board away from the metal framework. Use the squares as indicators of where to push. The logic board is secured to the framework with mild adhesive; be careful not to bend the logic board by pushing too much in any one spot.

Step 18 — Click Wheel

Use a small iPod opening tool to flip up the black plastic tab holding the orange click wheel ribbon in place. The black tab will rotate up 90 degrees, releasing the ribbon cable.

Use a small iPod opening tool to loosen the click wheel cable from the logic board. Be careful not to bend the cable too much, or the electronics on the cable could be damaged.

Disconnect the click wheel cable from of its connector, and lift the entire click wheel assembly away from the logic board.

The click wheel should now be separate from the rest of the iPod.

Step 19 — Logic Board

Use a small iPod opening tool to flip up the brown plastic tab holding the orange hard drive ribbon in place. The brown tab will rotate up 90 degrees, releasing the ribbon cable.

Slide the orange hard drive ribbon cable directly out of its connector. The cable may be attached to the logic board with some adhesive. If the cable doesn't immediately come free, carefully pull up on the cable to loosen the adhesive.

Logic board remains.

Step 1 — Case

Before opening your iPod, ensure that the hold switch is in the locked position. The slider should be all the way to the right if your iPod is facing you.

Step 2

Opening the iPod can be challenging. Do not get discouraged if it takes you a few tries before the iPod is opened.

Free the first retainer clip on the bottom of the iPod using the large iPod opening tool. The tool's edge should point towards the metal back case to prevent scratching the plastic front.

Step 3

There are five retaining clips on each side of the iPod. The large iPod opening tool will be used to separate the plastic front from the metal back of the iPod.

Insert the large iPod opening tool into the left side of the iPod, with the edge of the tool pointing towards the metal back.

Gently enlarge the existing crevice by wiggling the large iPod opening tool and moving it to the left.

Continue doing so until the entire side of the iPod is loose.

You can then insert the small iPod opening tool near the Hold button. Be very careful while inserting the tool, as the display is very fragile.

Step 4

Gently glide the small iPod opening tool on the top of the display, making sure to free the retaining clips.

The other sides of the iPod should now easily come loose. If they do not, use iPod opening tools on the right side of the iPod in the same way as on the left side of the iPod.

Separate the front of the iPod from the back about an inch (or a couple of centimeters).

The iPod casing is now open, but don't completely separate the two halves just yet. Two ribbon cables are still connecting the back panel to the rest of the iPod.

Step 5

Use a small iPod opening tool to slide up the brown connector holding the orange battery ribbon cable in place. You only need to lift the brown connector up about 1-2mm to free the cable.

Make sure to slide the brown connector directly upwards. The connector is frail and will break if it is accidentally shifted to the side.

Remove the cable from the connector.

Step 6

You should now have one orange ribbon cable still attaching the front case to the back.

At this point you are able to remove and replace the blue rubber bumpers, or continue with separating the case.

Step 7

Lift up the hard drive to expose the headphone jack ribbon connector (indicated by the yellow box).

If the hard drive bumpers come loose, make sure to put them back with the notch as shown in the picture.

Step 8

With the small iPod opening tool, gently lift the brown tab of the headphone ribbon cable connector. The tab will rotate up 90 degrees, releasing the ribbon cable.

Using your fingers, pull out the headphone jack ribbon cable.

Step 9

The front and back of the iPod should now be completely separated.

Step 10 — Battery

Be careful not to damage any of the headphone or battery ribbon cables while performing this step.

Insert the small iPod opening tool in between the metal case and battery at the location illustrated by the picture.

Gently wiggle the tool while pushing it further in between the battery and back case. The adhesive holding the battery should give, allowing the battery to be removed from the rear panel.

Step 11 — Headphone Jack and Hold Switch

Be very careful when performing this step, since the orange ribbon cables can easily be broken.

Peel off the tape holding the ribbon cables in place.

Step 12

Remove the two black Phillips screws that are securing the headphone jack to the lower casing.

Step 13

Remove the following two screws:

One black Phillips screw securing the hold switch near the corner of the iPod.

One silver Phillips screw securing the other side of the hold switch.

Step 14

Lift the Hold switch free of its housing on the rear panel.

Slide the headphone jack out of its housing on the rear panel.

Lift the headphone jack and hold switch assembly out of the iPod.

Step 15

If you're just trying to remove the rear panel, you can skip Steps 15 and 16.

Remove the single Phillips screw nearest to the hold switch.

Lift the plastic portion of the Hold switch away from the orange ribbon cable.

Ensure that the black notch lines up with the gray slider during reassembly of the switch (see picture 2).

Step 16

Use the small iPod opening tool to carefully peel the orange ribbon cable and attached black Hold switch up from the metal backing.

When re-attaching the replacement Hold switch, make sure the two small posts on the back of the switch are aligned with the two holes in the metal backing.

If necessary, the blue foam padding on the hard drive might also need to be transferred to the replacement drive.

Step 11 — Hard Drive Cable

Use the small iPod opening tool to release the brown clamp holding the hard drive cable in place. The tab will rotate up 90 degrees towards the display, releasing the ribbon cable.
